I started with the figure — she felt like the heart of the painting, so everything else had to grow from there. As I worked, the background slowly took shape, layers of color and loose brushstrokes building into a kind of abstracted garden around her. I tried to keep the marks fresh and unplanned, so the whole piece would hold onto that sense of immediacy and movement.
